As an older adult, you are considering starting weight training.  You’ve read the articles on the benefits it provides.  The only problem is that the gym can be an intimidating place.  Plus, you don’t know how to use the equipment, nor can you take the risk of getting hurt.  Hiring a personal trainer seems like a good idea, but is it worth the money?

As we age, our bodies change, and we may develop certain health conditions requiring a specialized exercise approach. A certified personal trainer can work with older adults to assess their fitness level, identify any limitations or concerns, and create a safe and effective program for them.  At Corefit, our trainers are fully invested in you.  A good trainer will ask about your health and training history, goals and concerns. They will also assess how you move in certain positions if you have any restrictions and imbalances. We will write your training program only after understanding your needs and where you are physically.  Your sessions with a trainer consist of teaching you how to use the equipment safely, following a tailored training program based on your goals and challenging enough to keep improving.

In addition to providing a customized exercise program, your personal trainer can also help you improve your overall health and well-being. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis and improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility. Personal training can also help improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.  Another benefit of personal training for older adults is that it gives them the motivation and accountability they need to stick to their exercise program. Many older adults may find it difficult to stay motivated to exercise on their own, but a personal trainer can provide the encouragement and support needed to keep you on track.

Personal training is also a great way for older adults to stay active and engaged with others. Many older adults may feel isolated and lonely, and personal training can allow them to socialize and connect with other like-minded individuals.  Our Semi-Private Training sessions give you the opportunity to train with your spouse, friend or another Corefit client.  In addition, you are now part of the Corefit family and will meet like-minded individuals.

Finally, personal training can be a cost-effective investment for older adults. While the cost of personal training may seem high, considering the potential benefits to one’s health and well-being can be a wise investment in the long run.

Determining a personal trainer’s actual cost will vary depending on his experience, the area you are located, and if you want an in-home training session or training at a gym or studio.  As a guideline, in the GTA, you will find rates around $75 to $120 for a one-hour session.

What do you need to know about your trainer?

Your safety should be your number one concern.  Therefore, ask the trainer you are considering hiring if they have a certification to work with older adults.  How many clients in your age group are they training?  How long have they been training?  What courses, books, and seminars have they attended lately?  A good trainer is always learning.  Don’t be shy to write down the name of their certifications so you can research them later.  A quick Google search with the certification’s name and whether it is good will give you plenty of information.

At Corefit, we offer a wide range of services that can accommodate any budget.  We offer one-on-one personal training at your home or at our studio.  Another option is our semi-private training sessions that allow you to share your trainer with another person.  We also offer online training through our training app.  And finally, you can combine in-person training with online training.  Give us a call, and tell us how we can help you reach your health and fitness goals.
