Let me introduce you to John. John came to me at our Corefit studio in Etobicoke with a big goal and a bigger worry: he wanted to keep up with his grandkids but was convinced his days of running, jumping, and climbing stairs without groaning were behind him. Fast forward six months, and John now leads the family in backyard games, wins impromptu dance-offs, and swears he feels 20 years younger.

Staying active after 60 isn’t about chasing a perfect body or breaking world records—it’s about living fully, laughing often, and feeling good in your own skin. Whether you’re rediscovering old passions or trying something new, here are 10 fun, practical, and occasionally funny tips to keep you moving (and loving it) at any age.

1. Rediscover the Joy of Movement (Because Sitting Isn’t a Sport 🪑🚫

Remember when moving was fun? Riding bikes with friends, dancing at weddings, or gardening for hours without realizing it? That joy doesn’t have an expiration date—you just have to find it again.

Take Carol, one of my clients. She hated the idea of “exercise” but loved being in her garden. With a few tweaks, we turned her gardening into her daily workout. Now, her roses are thriving, and so is she.

Pro tip: If it feels like play, it doesn’t feel like work. Bonus points if it makes you smile! 😊

2. Start Small (Because Big Changes Start With Little Steps 👣

John didn’t start with an hour-long workout. His first goal? Walk around the block without huffing and puffing. One month later, he was walking to the grocery store and carrying his groceries back. A one kilometre walk each way. By month three, he was walking 20 to 30 minutes daily.

Small wins are worth celebrating. They build momentum, confidence, and—most importantly—habits that stick.

Motivational nugget: “Progress, not perfection, is what matters. Even one step forward is still a step!” 🎉

3. Make Fitness Social (Because Everything’s Better With Friends 👫👬👭

Exercise doesn’t have to be a solo journey. In fact, it’s way more fun with a buddy—or a whole class! Eventually, once he was comfortable working out with free weights, John went from personal training to semi-private training and discovered that half the fun was the laughter, camaraderie, and shared “why are we doing this?” looks during a tough workout.

Joan, another client, turned her semi-private training into her weekly “friend time.” Now she jokes that she comes for the laughs and stays for the squats.

Why it works: Accountability, connection, and laughter burn calories too.

4. Warm Up and Cool Down (Because Nobody Likes a Pulled Hammy 🥴

Think of your warm-up as a friendly “hello” to your muscles and your cool-down as their thank-you note. Skipping these steps is like jumping into a car without warming it up in the dead of winter—things won’t end well.

One client learned this the hard way when she skipped her cool-down and spent the next day walking like a penguin. Now, she never forgets!

Corefit mantra: “Stretch now or creak later. Your choice!” 🙃

5. Try Something New (Even If You Feel Awkward 🤸 ♀️🤦 ♂️)

Let’s face it—trying yoga for the first time might feel silly. But stepping out of your comfort zone is good for your body and your brain. Plus, you’ll have a great story to tell.

Some of our clients, complement their weight training with yoga, pilates or tai chi. Irene once told me after her first class, “I’ve never been this tangled up without Christmas lights involved!” Now, she swears by it for her balance and flexibility.

Pro tip: Everyone feels a little ridiculous at first. Lean into it—you’ll thank yourself later.

6. Listen to Your Body (It Knows What It’s Doing 💪🧠

Your body is smarter than you think. It knows when it’s had enough and when it can handle a little more. The key is to listen. Pain isn’t progress; it’s a warning.

John used to push through discomfort, thinking it was part of the process. Now, he’s learned to recognize the difference between “challenging” and “too much.”

Mantra to remember: Discomfort? Okay. Pain? Nope.

7. Stay Hydrated (Because Water Is Basically Magic 💧✨

Let’s get one thing straight: coffee doesn’t count as hydration (sorry, Bob). Drinking water keeps your energy up, your joints happy, and your workouts more effective.

One client swears by her “fancy” water bottle. She says, “If I drink from it, I feel like I’m at a five-star spa. Hydration, but make it bougie.”

Hydration hack: Add a slice of lemon, cucumber, or mint for a little extra flair.

8. Get the Family Involved (Fitness Is More Fun Together 👨 👩 👧 👦)

Want to make fitness fun? Turn it into family time. John started playing tag with his grandkids. Not only did he tire them out (a win in itself), but he also got a killer workout without even realizing it.

Another client organized a family hike, complete with homemade medals for the kids. Now it’s a monthly tradition—and she’s the “cool grandma” who can keep up with everyone.

Why it works: Fitness + bonding time = unforgettable memories.

9. Track Your Progress (Celebrate Every Win 🏆

Progress isn’t just about numbers. It’s about feeling better, moving easier, and having more energy. John started tracking his walks and was amazed at how quickly he went from “one block and done” to “three miles with no breaks.”

Most of our clients write down their fitness “wins” in our Corefit training app. One favourite entry? “Stood up from the couch without saying ‘ooof.’”

Pro tip: Celebrate every step forward, no matter how small. 🎊
